Today we are going to talk about a very important topic: Body Composition Change

RC: Hi Dr. Kasprowicz, how are you today?

Dr. Jan Kasprowicz: I’m doing great, how are you doing today?

RC: I’m doing great. Thanks so much for being here with us.

Question 1: What does the term Body Composition Change mean for you and your practice?

RC: So what does the term ‘body composition change’ mean for you and your practice?

Dr. Jan Kasprowicz: Well, our Total Body Conditioning program is based on body composition change. By utilizing a certain exercise, utilizing a heart rate monitor and a medically proven program, we’ve been able to reduce our patients’ and clients’ percent body fat and also increase the lean body mass.

A lot of times when people do start an exercise program, they notice that (you know) they’re going to get some loss in weight but unfortunately, majority of the times when people do begin a training program with a trainer or they start doing something on their own, they don’t have a baseline idea of where their body fat, how much percent body fat they have, how much muscle they actually have, how much visceral fat they have (which is a fat that’s around their organs). And once they start noticing they are dropping weight, they have a tendency to start working out a little bit harder which, in turn, usually means they’re actually just burning more muscle or protein for fuel instead of really getting the body to burn fat. What we try to focus our patients on is to burn fat for fuel while they maintain that lean body mass which is muscle.

Question 2: When you measure body composition, what body parts and features are you looking at?

RC: Alright and when you measure body composition, what body parts and features are you looking at?

Dr. Jan Kasprowicz: We’re able to measure a person’s body composition both muscle and fat. We measure how much muscle and fat someone has in each arm, their right arm compared to their left arm. Each leg, their torso, even how much fat around their organ as well. It’s a very detailed and precise analysis and then we do this every two weeks so this way, we can actually see where their body is actually losing the fat.  We can see where they’re actually either losing or gaining muscle mass as well.

Question 3: Please describe the InBody Composition Analyzer and how it works.

RC: And please describe the InBody Composition Analyzer tool and how it works.

Dr. Jan Kasprowicz: The InBody is actually what is called an impedance scale. An impedance scale is a scale which sends a certain wave length of electricity through your body. Don’t get me wrong, you can buy an impedance scale over at Walmart for about a hundred dollars but it only utilizes one wave length of electricity, it’s usually five megahertz. The InBody actually has three different wave lengths, it has five, fifty and five-hundred megahertz. The reason why it utilizes three different frequencies is because we have different types of tissues in our body. So ‘impedance’ means to go through. So we want to have different wave lengths so this way it can go through different tissues. The InBody scale – it’s not just something you stand on; there’s also handles on it as well. The electricity on a regular impedance scale just goes through the lower extremity, goes through the lower portion of your torso and back down the other leg. With an InBody, it literally travels from your feet to the top of your head down both arms down into the other leg. It tells us exactly how much percent body fat you have, how much lean body mass you have, how much muscle you have, how much your bone weighs, actually the amount of visceral fat or fat around your organs. It tells us how much muscle and fat you have in each arm and in each leg, in your torso. It also tells us how many calories your body needs per day just to function – its basic function. What it also tells us is your hydration which is very important because we want to make sure that all our clients and patients while they’re doing our program are properly hydrated.

Question 4: What does a typical treatment and exercise program look like for someone looking to improve their body composition?

RC: What does a typical treatment and exercise program look like for someone looking to improve their body composition?

Dr. Jan Kasprowicz: Typical treatment plan for a majority of our clients and patients starts with the first day when they come in. When they come in, we actually don’t ask them any questions. What we do is we put them on the InBody scale and this way we have a baseline. We see where they body is at, how much percent body fat they have, how much muscle they have. Most importantly their visceral fat.

To look good on the beach, to have that six pack – that’s very important for many people. From my perspective, it’s visceral fat which is most important because that visceral fat tells us how much fat is around your organs and that is where the body stores a lot of its toxins.

So off the InBody then we sit down with our clients and we do some goal setting, see what their actual goals are. And then we give them an introduction on how to use a heart rate monitor. And then that day, the first day, we start their exercise program.

Prior to starting the actual exercise, we do some stretching. We stretch usually the quad, the hamstring and the glutes because these are the major calorie burning muscles of the body. Then we go ahead and mobilize the entire body.  We want to make sure you have good spinal biomechanics so this way the spine is moving well. And then we start a thirty to forty minute full body workout where we utilize what is called metabolic exercise. This way we’re not just focusing on chest and arms one day and legs another day. We take on full body exercises so this way you’re utilizing muscles of the lower body and upper body during the entire workout. This way you’re burning more calories plus you’re able to increase the amount of lean body mass on your body as well.

Question 5: Do you have an example of a typical patient and their success achieved by working with you?

RC: Alright and my last question. I know there is no such thing as a typical patient, however, do you have an example of a typical patient and their success achieved by working with you?

Dr. Jan Kasprowicz: We just actually had a police officer last week come in who has been coming. He has a very good fitness level because he is active but he does have a little bit of excess body fat on him. So he’s been coming to us two times a week probably for the last six maybe seven weeks and he’s actually been able to lose about six percent body fat.

We have another police officer that we work with and he started in January and he’s actually dropped sixty pounds of body weight total.

We also have kids as well. Unfortunately, due to all the high technology these days, a lot of kids are stuck in front of a computer or they are on their iPad or their iPhone and they’re not getting out there being active enough either.

So we don’t have typical patients. We have a lot of success stories. But we also have other patients who have significant underlying disease issues where it’s difficult for them to exercise and lose weight so in those cases, we have a clinical exercise physiologist come in who actually works with them and with us to make sure they’re working on the most efficient program to achieve their goals.

Great. Well thank you so much Dr. Kasprowicz. We know you are really busy so thanks for all your time and help today.
